Nanowrimo draws ever closer

Here's a post I threw out to my KoL clan's message board. Because I feel guilty about not blogging, I'll post it here:

It's getting to be that time of year again. That most wonderful time of the year. The time of year that tries our souls. No, not Christmas. Not Halloween. Not even my birthday (October 22, by the way). November 1st marks the start of National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo for short).

If you've ever said, "One day I'm going to write that book", here's thirty days. If you've heard there's a story inside everybody, this is your chance to pull it kicking and screaming into the world. If there's not enough stress in your life, why not up the ante by writing a book. Too much stress... Then why not a nice relaxing novel?

NaNoWriMo is the brainchild of Chris Baty. It's utterly free, offers no prizes or monetary rewards and is more fun than you can imagine. I've done it four years in a row and have three odd, misshapen, unedited pieces of "literature" to show for it. (One year, the year I tried to do it without alcohol, I failed. Kids: don't drink, but if you do why not write a novel?)

The only thing that makes the writing process more fun is knowing others are suffering... I mean having fun alongside you. Hence my recruitment. Novels don't have to have such luxuries as plot, character development, achingly beautiful metaphors or proper spelling. No one but you ever has to read it. Plus, you can tell people you're a novelist!

Intrigued? Check out nanowrimo.com, or just sit back and laugh at me as I strive towards 50,000 semi-coherent words in 30 days.

Hooray for Movie Month!

Since November obligations (primarily NaNoWriMo) preclude superfluous entertainment, I designated October to be Movie Watching Month, in which I endeavor to watch 31 movies. Not a very taxing challenge to be sure, but despite my DVD collecting fetish... I'm not really a movie guy.

Last night was Sullivan's Travels, the 1941 Preston Sturges film about a comedy director (Joel McCrea) that wants to make a movie about weightier issues: the plight of the poor. So he travels the country with Veronica Lake (mostly the part of the country between Hollywood and Las Vegas). He winds up imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit and must prove his innocence. No wait, I'm thinking of a different movie: He's imprisoned for a crime he did commit, but he's a big shot Hollywood type, so c'mon! This is quite an enjoyable movie and the Criterion transfer on the DVD looks spectacular, as always.

Also, New York Times profiles S.E. Hinton (free registration required) and today is Efren Ramirez's birthday. Vote for Pedro!

Businessweek Article on Lego

Lego recently became the third biggest toy company in the world. Neat!

Lego execs are cautious because they know children are fickle -- and that 50% of a toy company's sales come through in the last six weeks of the year.
