So, by 10 years of age they are able to talk well enough to tell you their age?
Exactly!
Actually, my conservationist friend showed me how to count the "rings" on a turtle just like a tree (although you don't have to chop down the turtle).
In the larger flickr version of the picture, one can see the growth rings on each plate of the shell.
